Episode 129: Rumiko Takahashi

This podcast hit a few snags. First, we were supposed to do the episode with both Kittyhawk and Abby, but the first recording only featured Kittyhawk. We attempted a second, for which we only had Abby. In spite of what seems like a cursed podcast, it ended up working out fine, because most of what we talked about between the two shows were unique enough to stitch them together and make one super gigantic podcast!

Breaking my no-epic-length rule, this one is well worth the listen, filled with lots of laughs and the silliness of Rumiko’s cartoons. We were initially only going to talk about the Rumiko shorts, but due to some miscommunication, we ended up talking about virtually everything under the sun.

  1. Okay. I haven’t listened to the podcast yet, but I have to make this remark/diatribe beforehand. Rumiko Takahashi seems to be another one of those stalwart artists that either resist or have found no need for the Artistic Evolution traits a lot of other artists pick up over time. Like the shark, earthworm, and quite a few crustaceans, she seems not to need or want to adapt new traits. She survives well enough where she is artistically. I guess the same could be said of people who draw our Sunday comic strips, but even there I see the evolution of their art over time(Speed, color sense, and character design count toward the changes). Whereas others seem to continue the chain of changes throughout time(Fred Perry, Humberto Ramos, Oh Great!, and Kosuke Fujishima), hers seems to have curiously stopped. At least it’s recognizable as her work irrefutably no matter the era. I definitely see some growth and variation here and there, but nothing as drastic as Fujishima’s stuff or Ramos.

    Oh well, just wanted to rattle that off before I heard the ep.

    Anyway, I think you guys should do a episode on One-Punch Man, it basically animation 🙂
    I haven’t read the original One-Punch Man (because I can’t read Japanese), but I do love the story and the art of the remake
    It sad, the only Rumiko Takahashi Anime/Manga I read/watch are Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2 and InuYasha. I do need to check out Rumic Theater, it sound very interesting.
    I didn’t know that Rumiko was still making Manga, I guess I never notice it.
    I think Rumiko just like to draw, don’t really think it about the money
    Detective Conan still going on!? I shouldn’t be that shock, it started the same time as One Piece did

  3. Yeah, Rumiko has a knack for fun, but not so much for the progression of, well, anything.

    And off topic, I am shocked, SHOCKED, that no Sonic fanboy has been man (or fool) enough to challenge your assessment of SatAM. I’m no pugilist, but I wanna see some blood! It would make your Blanchard-thrashings seem tame in comparison!

    • Unlike other certain podcast hosts, AA doesn’t do ambush jobs. We let people know if they’re getting into a fight. I think that’s why.

  4. On a side not: If you “want” to check out*ahem* a newer super sentai show that’s the least cheesiest of them all, I’ll suggest Go-Busters. I’m no fan of super sentai(PR even LESS.), yet it was surprisingly tolerable enough for me to watch. Plus, the name of giant monsters/robots here are called Megazords. Hehehe.

  5. You would think with all of the advances in T.V. special effects. The Americans can come up with their own super sentai shows without copying the Japanese. And make a super sentai series so good. The Japanese would copy the Americans for a change.
