Episode 79: Akira and Ghost In The Shell

Ghost In The Shell

oh shit...

Ben and I were indecisive as whether to do Ghost In The Shell or Akira…so because we’re masochists, we decided to do both. At long last, we’ve decided to take on the two more pretentious anime movies ever made!

To be fair, our gripe with Akira is mostly directed at how overhyped it is. Yes, we know the animation is absolutely gorgeous, but the story itself is nothing particularly special. Oh, and it’s also way too long. It’s padded out with pseudo-philosophical mumbo-jumbo that nobody can follow, because it makes no damn sense. It’s fun watching gorgeous animation of a city getting torn to bits, but I shouldn’t have to sit through 100 minutes of nonsense about ameoba children in order to get to that part.

And then there’s Ghost In The Shell. Finally, you guys get to hear why I hate this movie and everything it inspires. Get ready for a smackdown on the existential crisis genre of anime, because I lay the hate down on this film. It’s not even animated as well as Akira. It’s slow, boring, and had me fidgeting in my seat, despite being 40 minutes shorter. Ghost In The Shell might be the king of pretentious anime.

This episode is about:
The star child
Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers
“Get your ass to Mars!”
“Kakarot!!! I mean…Kaneda!!!”
Ooshi must be stopped, no matter the cost.
Fuck both of these films; watch Roujin Z
Watch Dominion Tank Police, too.

Oh, here’s something that drives me crazy. I wouldn’t hate Ghost In The Shell half as much if I didn’t know so many people who make the exact following argument.

"It's different when it's my favorite anime!"

If you've ever made this argument, do the world a favor and kindly get over yourself.

As someone who enjoys shit like Dirty Pair, Slayers, or Tenchi, I at least have the candidness to tell you that I like it because of the sexy girls. Anyone who tries to tell you that there’s a deeper meaning to Kusanagi wearing a thong is a condescending prick.

I'm sure these are all just coincidences

Episode 78: My Little Pony & Jem!

My Little Pony

Ah, girls entertainment in the 80s. Pastel and sparkly.

Stopping by this week is our old pal Kittyhawk of Valkyrie Yuuki and special guest Zuey from Destroy All Podcasts DX. Our topic is My Little Pony and Jem! Yes, to conclude our Sunbow spotlight (for now), we’re talking about the girl cartoons. Keep in mind, we could have talked about Robotix, Inhumanoids, or Big Foot & The Muscle Machines, but we decided to spare you guys some torture.

We talk about a lot of fun stuff, like the different generations of Ponies, later iterations of MLP that you may not (and should not) remember, and how the My Little Pony movie manages to be even more of a toy commercial than the Transformers movie. Speaking of which, My Little Pony: The Movie demonstrates why you should never mix animation from AKOM and Toei. Don’t do it!

We talk at length about “Rescue From Midnight Castle”, which might actually be one of the most badass things that Marvel/Sunbow ever produced. It’s a shame that the quality of MLP dropped so rapidly afterward.

And at the end of the show, stick around, because we have some bonus animation talk with our guests about obscure shit that you may or may not have heard of. One of our listeners requested that we get Robin & The Dreamweavers. Funny enough, we were already talking about that before the request was made! And guess what! Kittyhawk is going to get it for us! OH NOES!!!!

Episode 77: He-Man and The Terrible Era of Filmation!

He-Man

Orko!!! How did you get in here?! Don't tell anyone what you saw!

Well, it was coming sooner or later. We’ve delved into Filmation. On this episode, we talk mainly about He-Man and its spin-offs. Other topics include a very disorganized look back at the history of Filmation, Daffy Duck Meets The Groovy Ghoulies, the Faux Busters, Happily Ever After, the legacy of Lou Scheimer, and even a lost “gem” that Erika Scheimer didn’t want the world to know about.

Yes, it’s He-Man tonight, ladies and gentlemen. And helping us is Andy, a listener of the show and quite the He-Man buff himself. While we blast the (extremely) limited animation and overuse of rotoscoping, Andy brings in his knowledge about the toy franchise.

Topics covered:
How to pronounce Conan
“…but, Adam!”
Teela is fucking stupid!
Two men on a horse
Orko walked in on He-Man with his sword in his hand
Theatrical five-part episodes
Taking moral advice from a klepto
Skeletor’s faceturn
Princess Adora is hot
The New Adventures… not how I remembered ’em!
King Randor kicks ass in the ’02 series!

Also, be sure to check out Blanchard’s Powers Of Grayskull series for a more indepth, episode-by-episode coverage.

Well, this looks rather...erm... you know...

Boy, when Teela finds out about this...

Episode 76: The Dirty Pair!

The Dirty Pair

Kei and Yuri

This week, we talk about a classic. Ben and I talk about the Dirty Pair, a franchise that has seen animation, comics, and novels. And we talk about all of it; the light novels, the original anime, the OVAs, the movies, Dirty Pair Flash, and the Adam Warren comic series.

As you might imagine, this is one of my all-time favorites. It’s got girls with long, lucious legs in a space utopia filled with flying cars, interstellar space travel, rocket backpacks, robots, and all sorts of neat stuff!

Who doesn’t love the Dirty Pair?! Terrible people. That’s who.

This episode was recorded to coincide with the release of the new Dirty Pair movie box set, which includes both the ADV English dub and the highly sought-after Streamline Pictures English dub! Yes, it’s justice for Carl Macek. You need to buy it right now!

We’ll return to Dirty Pair in July with the DVD release of Dirty Pair Flash!
