Episode 130: Early Warner Brothers

buddy

Today we have a rather short episode in which Ben and I discuss early animation at Warner Brothers. We’re rather glib about the short careers of Buddy and Bosko, but honestly there’s not much to say about them.

What I personally find more interesting is what went on at the studio around that time as the animation industry was taking shape. Animation was in its infancy. Characters barely had personality. Many old cartoons were played with the accompaniment of music. It wasn’t until cartoons could be timed to their soundtrack that the medium we know of today was born.

So sit back and listen to about twenty minutes of Ben and me gabbing about this stuff. Afterward, you can hear us babble on about stuff in the webcomic world and other random cartoon topics. In all, it’s still an hour-long show. Our main topic is just dreadfully short this week.

Also, be sure to check out my hosting of The Tonncast. I was a bit clumsy in my duties, but it was a fun show. My surprise shocking guest for the show was the ever gracious Todd Robert Anderson!

Episode 129: Rumiko Takahashi

When Ben told me we'd be talking about the Rumik shorts, I must have gotten confused and thought he meant this.

This podcast hit a few snags. First, we were supposed to do the episode with both Kittyhawk and Abby, but the first recording only featured Kittyhawk. We attempted a second, for which we only had Abby. In spite of what seems like a cursed podcast, it ended up working out fine, because most of what we talked about between the two shows were unique enough to stitch them together and make one super gigantic podcast!

Breaking my no-epic-length rule, this one is well worth the listen, filled with lots of laughs and the silliness of Rumiko’s cartoons. We were initially only going to talk about the Rumiko shorts, but due to some miscommunication, we ended up talking about virtually everything under the sun.

Episode 128: The Roadrunner

The RoadrunnerYep, we talk about everyone’s favorite chase cartoon. Tom and Jerry was good. Syvester and Tweety were better. But no one beats Coyote and Roadrunner! We contrast and compare with other chase cartoons, and we even talk about Ralph Wolf.

Later in the episode, we talk a little bit about Tom & Jerry as well as early television Hanna-Barbera cartoons. We also talk about Blanchard’s favorite topic, which is John Semper and Spider-Man. We have a mini discussion about John K. and even engage in the riveting topic of how Jefferson Airplane became Jefferson Starship.

Yep, it’s gonna be one of those rambly episodes. Oh, but they’re all rambly.

Episode 127: Sailor Moon

I shall punish you!

I shall punish you!

This week, we’re joined by Kittyhawk and Abby Lehrke to talk about Sailor Moon!

Yes, after many weeks of giving it the stink eye and pulling my hair out, it’s the Sailor Moon episode. Normally, I can clean up the audio and present you with a pristine podcast. But, one of our recorders failed, so I had to default to the Skype recorder and using other recordings to fill in some of the mess.

For the most part, it sounds okay, but you’ll notice some crackling and background noise. I tried my best.
