Episode 124: Obscure 80s Anime

Welcome to the 80s

from Megazone 23. Yes, this is what passed for aerobics wear in the 80s. It was indeed a magical time.

Kittyhawk is back this week, and we’re talking about obscure 80s anime. This is the stuff that made us fall in love with anime back in the early 90s, when we used to call it “Japanimation.” We say “early 90s” because most of this stuff wasn’t even available in American in the decade that they were created. We had to wait around for Streamline Pictures and Central Park Media to bring this stuff to us.

The 80s was a special time. It was a time of leotards and legwarmers. Leather jackets and torn jeans. And everyone had a boombox with high-speed dubbing.

But there is nothing so aggressively 80s as the anime of the era. Come join us for this brief journey into some of our obscure favorites, and tell us some of yours.

Project A-Ko - Possibly the most iconic anime of the era.

Riding Bean is what came before Gunsmith Cats. Gunsmith Cats is better, but if you want more guns and cars in an 80s car chase scenario, you might want to check out Riding Bean.

This is what you would get if you took the Force out of Star Wars. You'd have Han Solo: The Movie. ...aka Crusher Joe.

Listen to the show to hear about the rare localized Harlock cartoon. Possibly the most obscure of them all!

Episode 117: G-Gundam

G-Gundam

G-Gundam

Ben and I joined this week by Pablo and listener Robert Bell to talk about G-Gundam, an odd entry in the Gundam series, which fuses giant robots with professional wrestling.

Episode 114: The Vision Of Escaflowne

Vision Of Escaflowne

Vision Of Escaflowne

This week, it’s The Vision of Escaflowne! In this series, a girl is whisked away to a planet called Gaea, a world of robot mecha and divining powers.

Kittyhawk and the Chu take over this episode and a lot of passion for the show, both positive and negative, comes to the surface. Things become heated for a moment, but we’re all cool in the end.

This episode may have some of the longest stretches of audio in which neither Ben nor Neil say ANYTHING.

Episode 82: Dirty Pair Flash

Dirty Pair Flash

Yes, this is as badass as it looks!

Tonight we’re joined by Brett Weaver, formerly of ADV Films, and we are talking about Dirty Pair Flash, an extremely underrated anime OVA series from the 90s. Is it a reboot or a prequel? The answer is… uh… yes? (I don’t know!) But who cares?! This series is so awesome! It’s got explosions, toilet humor, tits, robots, spaceships, laser swords, and everything else you could ever ask for from a 90s anime!

Topics:
Cribbing from Adam Warren
Yuri living up to her name once again
A village of Bretts
Rearry orffensive Asian stererotypes
Yes, I said that Dirty Pair Flash is better than GITS. Live with it.

Kei's boobs

You don't get transformations like this in Sailor Moon!

Leave it to me to find the space bikini in Dirty Pair Flash!

WOOHOO!! SWIMSUITS!!!!

Showing skin. There's lots of this!

Episode 76: The Dirty Pair!

The Dirty Pair

Kei and Yuri

This week, we talk about a classic. Ben and I talk about the Dirty Pair, a franchise that has seen animation, comics, and novels. And we talk about all of it; the light novels, the original anime, the OVAs, the movies, Dirty Pair Flash, and the Adam Warren comic series.

As you might imagine, this is one of my all-time favorites. It’s got girls with long, lucious legs in a space utopia filled with flying cars, interstellar space travel, rocket backpacks, robots, and all sorts of neat stuff!

Who doesn’t love the Dirty Pair?! Terrible people. That’s who.

This episode was recorded to coincide with the release of the new Dirty Pair movie box set, which includes both the ADV English dub and the highly sought-after Streamline Pictures English dub! Yes, it’s justice for Carl Macek. You need to buy it right now!

We’ll return to Dirty Pair in July with the DVD release of Dirty Pair Flash!
