This week in Retronauts, it’s vidja game cartoon time! Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, and Ray Barnholt talk about what is sadly the best of the DiC video game cartoons.

Captain N was a major cash-in on the NES craze of the day. A show like this could never be made today, because of how divided the video game market is today. But back in the late 80s, Nintendo basically dominated the market in such a large way that many of the Capcom and Konami franchises were thought of as “Nintendo games”. This stigma really wouldn’t be broken until the PlayStation era.

Today, it’s actually considered special that characters like Mega Man show up as guest stars in Super Smash Bros. Back in the day, Mega Man was just as much Nintendo as Mario and Link.

Episode 121: The Book of Virtues

What idiots buy for their children

What idiots buy for their children

All I can say is…UGH. Ben needed a topic for this week, and we spun our “Wheel O’ Topics” which landed on this turd.

What happens when you let a talentless political idealist direct a cartoon as opposed to an actual cartoonist? You get this. A half-hour of preachy values, strained connections to ancient fables, and bargain basement cartoon characters so forgettable that even Chris-Chan doesn’t know who they are.

I suppose it could have been worse. It could have been Veggie Tales.

Episode 118: We Double-Checked, Filmation Still Sucks

Fat Abbot

The show this is from is better animated than anything Filmation ever did.

“Inspired” by a recent altercation over something completely irrelevant, Ben and I tread over some familiar ground and stomp all over Filmation a second time. We talk about some shows so unimportant that we don’t even remember their names, and we mock the overuse of stock footage for which Filmation is so remembered.

In a bonus round, we also talk about the next Ninja Turtles crossover. Seriously, one was enough.

Bonus Episode: More Sonic Stuff

Due to a busy week and poor planning, the Animation Aficionados have taken the week off. But we still have a podcast for you. We have the remainder of our conversation with The Chu as well as an extended version of our reactions to the Sonic fan film, which was released after we had recorded the last episode.

Yes, it’s just us complaining for over an hour, but your reward for this is Stardust Speedway.

Episode 107: Guilty Pleasures

The unloved Tom & Jerry cartoons. Are they really that bad or just misunderstood?

The unloved Tom & Jerry cartoons. Are they really that bad or just misunderstood?

This week, Kittyhawk returns! We talk about guilty pleasures. These are cartoons that we love in spite of being less than polished and perhaps even a little reviled. Every cartoon lover has a small list of shows that are loved in spite of their problems. It’s the closest we come to nostalgia, but hey, at least we’re honest. These are not good shows. We’re not going paint them with a rosey shade of nostalgia paint. We’re just here to confess our sins.

Discussed:
Gene Deitch’s Tom & Jerry
70s and 80s Hanna-Barbera
Ruin Explorers
CLAMP
Love Hina
…And one confession from Neil that brings the house down
