Episode 145: The Random Topic Show

The Late, Great Arthur Rankin

The Late, Great Arthur Rankin

We’ve been off for a few weeks, folks. To make it up to you, we’ve taken three different nights of recordings and compiled the best of it into a single, somewhat random show.

In the first segment, we reach out to you, the fans, to generate some topics for you. In the second half, Ben and I talk animation news, including the deaths of Hal Sutherland and Arthur Rankin.

  1. Still early into the podcast, but I’d like the mention that Space Dandy is awesome. It’s like Johnny Bravo… in Space. Except SD has a little more redeemable qualities than Bravo haha. And yes I like Bravo too XD

    • Agreed. Also The Lego Movie is technically animation. There’s Miyazaki’s last film, Avengers Confidential, Rick and Morty, lots of great topics (other than anime) ready to be discussed. The new TMNT cartoon! Or a post-mortem on Green Lantern and Young Justice.

  2. I know I have suggested it in the past in the comment section but how about Space Battleship Yamato and it’s sequels up through it’s modern incarnation with it’s tie ins to Galaxy Express 999, Captain Harlock, and Queen Esmerelda. The fact that this series helped bring anime from the early super robot era into a more grounded modern era of science fiction that helped pave the way for shows like Mobile Suit Gundam, Dougram, and other non-super robot series and anime.

Considering that Irresponsible Captain Tylor is held in good regard, hearing a take on one of the major shows that inspired Tylor would be a good show honestly.

  3. Well, here is my suggestion for episodes. I will try to suggest cartoons that are in English and easy to find Digimon, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Gurren Lagann, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Cowboy Bebop, Case Closed, Futurama, Ultimate Spider-Man (Hahaha!), Adventure Time, Eek The Cat, Angry Beavers, Hey Arnold!, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, Drawn Together and maybe One Piece since you guys forgot about it
Also, that South Park game is good. I already beat it

  4. Almost forgot about Young Justice, I suggest skip it. I really don’t like their version of Superboy and Superman. It was just meh, for me

  5. Holy crap, Snorks, Denver the Last Dinosaur… I’m gonna have to go hurt my childhood cartoon memories and watch some of those. I’m also planning on making my inner child cry tears of blood when I search out the original MLP series. Hated it so much as a kid (yet, I loved the toys…) I may have seen a whole single episode.

    • Well, we did a My Little Pony episode, but we might be willing to do a side-by-side with Friendship is Magic.

If you want to save yourself the pain, only watch “Rescue from Midnight Castle”. It’s actually a pretty watchable cartoon, and Megan’s original character design kinda rocks.

Everything after that is made of poo. …including the movie.

We’d love to have yo on for Snorks and Denver. Just gives us a heads-up.

      • LOL doesn’t surprise me 99.9% of the original MLP series was poo!

Denver: I am so there. Watching the pilot right now, actually. And one of the characters reminds me very distinctly of Gwizdo from Dragon Hunters (Chasseurs de Dragons).

BTW… I would *love* to discuss the Dragon Hunters movie with y’all. Ran across it on Netflix awhile back, I don’t think it’s there anymore. I had to buy the DVD. Didn’t get to see much of the cartoon series before it was pulled, but it seemed OK. Not sure if it’s on Hulu (yet).

  6. This might be off-topic, but this question has been bothering me for a good long while. The archives are too long to check through and the search didn’t turn up anything, so I’m not sure if this has already been addressed.

Why isn’t this podcast part of GCRN? You guys advertise it all the time.
