Episode 131: Cartoon Crossovers

Twelve laughs a year? You think THAT’S bad…

This week’s episode is all about Ben and I geeking out over cartoon crossovers. What happens when two or more of your favorite cartoons pals meet? Well, hopefully something good, but usually not.

The appeal of a crossover should be simple enough to understand. It’s a chance for popular characters to meet and share the spotlight. It’s like watching two of your favorite shows simultaneously. It’s a chance to mix and match styles of different universes to play off of one another. But usually what happens is that one half of the crossover will assume the lead and the other will simply be along for the ride. Sometimes there’s no chemistry and no reason is ever given for the crossover to have occurred. And sometimes, crossovers fail because the hype surround a crossover becomes so great that the people making it forgot to tell a story.

In any event, Ben and I talk about some of our favorite and not-so-favorite cartoon crossovers that have happened over the years.

Topics:
Defenders Of The Earth
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Jetsons Meet The Flintstones
Cartoon All-Stars To The Rescue
The Jimmy Timmy Power Hour
Daffy Duck Meets The Groovie Goolies
Hector Ramirez
Scooby Doo

  1. I never saw Defenders Of The Earth cartoon, the first time I hear of it was that Robot Chicken short. Also I did like The Phantom movie, I remember watching it over and over when I was a kid (really need to get the DVD)
I still mad at my teacher for showing me Cartoon All-Stars To The Rescue and making me write what happen afterward
Fairly Oddparents wasn’t that bad in the beginning, but now it sucks and have two Poochies now (one of them is really a dog). Jimmy Neutron was a ok show and I agree that the Jimmy cast was carrying Oddparents crew
Power Rangers In Space wasn’t that grim dark (the only dark thing happen was Zordon dying). TMNT Next Mutation was so bad, I was really mad when it crossover with PR.
My favorite crossovers are Cross Epoch, Superman & Batman: World Finest, Turtles Forever & Powerpuff and Justice Friends
Yeah, I should really stop watching NC. It just a waste of my time now
Saint Row stop being a clone of GTA in Saint Row the third (Saint Row 4 is an awesome game)

  2. … Mandrake and the Phantom crossed OVER??? With Flash Gordon??? Whaa?

You know, the more you mention that Power Ranger/live actionTMNT crossover, the more I don’t believe it, because I refuse to believe something that horrible could exist.

All because it’s power rangers, and live action TMNT. No, no, no, no, NO.

I’m so glad you mentioned Saints Row IV here. I always hated the GTA and their copycat sandbox games, but when I got Saints Row The Third(where Gat supposedly “died”), I initially bought it for its’ Create-A-Character, but playing the game itself, it threw the GTA clone tag out of the window and went nuts, and judging from what I seen of SRIV, it blasted off into space in a good way.

And it has Nolan North as Create-a-character voice choice. Fantastic. It is SOO bought.

I can think of only 2 reasons why there are people hating this game: it’s not GTA, and it’s not like the first 2 Saints Row games(just like those ’87 TMNT fans, or any fanboy/girl with ‘Rabid First Time Syndrome’. Ugh). I’m glad it’s not, or else I wouldn’t be playing SR3 and soon, SRIV. It’s fucking crazy, and I hope they keep it that way.

And yes, they referanced Ghostbusters 2 in a big way haha XD

  3. That scene in Roger Rabbit when Eddie drove into Toon Town was always chilling. All that insane wackiness, with almost every toon he meets nearly killing him. Classic film, and then you throw in Jessica Rabbit, DONE. SOLD.

    Speaking of crossovers,

I really hope Shantae Half-Genie Hero gets that Mighty Switch Force stuff. Oh maybe I said it before. Any excuse to use that picture. Oh, we got FUNDED!!

    Next stop…Risky Boots Mode! https://s3.amazonaws.com/ksr/assets/000/857/689/db70bb1a9e739d1f83a6422d56d4d309_large.png?1377380086

    • That scene in Roger Rabbit almost took me out of the film, because one of the plot points being Eddie’s dislike for toons resulting from the death of his brother. Bugs Bunny nearly kills the guy for the sake of a cartoon gag. My only rationalization is that Bugs understood the inherent magic of toon logic and knew that Eddie was never in any danger. Still, that always kind of bothers me, but only slightly.

  4. There are some crossovers I would like to mention. When Mr.T appeared on Alvin and the Chipmunks before getting his own show. Plus Robin, one of the gymnasts from Mr.T’s cartoon, makes a brief appearance on episodes of Turbo Teen and the
Punky Brewster cartoon since they’re produced by Ruby Spears. There’s also Heathcliff and Inspector Gadget making cameo appearances on each other’s shows. There’s also a reporter that looks suspiciously like Whitney Morgan from C.O.P.S interviewing the president in the Captain Planet episode “Greenhouse Planet”. There is even a crossover between Legend of Zelda and Captain N.
I like to think there a little subtle hintsthat lot of the cartoons produced by DIC like Inspector Gadget, Heathcliff, the Littles, Pole Position, M.A.S.K, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, Hulk Hogan’s Rock n Wrestling, Rainbow Brite, Kissyfur, Popples, Dennis the Menace, Real Ghostbusters, Maxie’s World, Beverly Hills Teens, Dinosaucers, Starcom, C.O.P.S, Captain Planet and Carmen Sandiego all take place in the same universe much like Sunbow,Ruby Spears and Disney are in their on universe. They just haven’t made it that obvious with the exception with Heathcliff/Inspector Gadget and Captain N/Legend of Zelda.
